“South Place Chop House knows its meats well – as evidenced by a cheeky diagram of cow parts spotted on the walls and the high-quality cutlery (from Tricketts of Sheffield) on the tables. There’s a classic choice of beef, chicken or pork, and you simply can’t go wrong with red meat here: the Old Spot pork belly is tender and melty, topped with a thick and crunchy layer of crackling and rich apple sauce, while the velvety roast beef oozes pleasingly bloody juices as soon as your knife touches it. All mains are served with a Yorkshire pudding, caramelised carrots and a boatload of gravy (reliably thick and savoury – you’ll want to ask for seconds).

Also impressive are the potatoes roasted in duck fat – just the moreish, smokey accompaniment you need for a feast like this. The roast comes with an immensely popular bottomless option – with free-flowing red, white, or rosé wine for just a £15 supplement. Don’t expect your average house wines here: high-quality French bottles are selected for the bottomless meal, ranging from Côtes du Rhônes to a 2014 Muscadet. Switching wines between courses does not cost extra and is highly recommended”
