From its inception, South Place Hotel has been conceived as an eco-friendly hotel, with the specific aim of receiving a BREAAM excellence rating. During the design phase, the hotel obtained the first BREAAM Excellent certificate.
BREEAM is one of the world’s leading environmental assessment methods for sustainable buildings, developed by the British institute Building Research Establishment. It supports investors, developers and architects to achieve sustainability at each stage of the building process – from the planning stage through construction and into the building’s operational “life”. Having targeted high levels of sustainability in design, construction and operation, South Place Hotel has implemented an integrated approach to sustainability – first, to reduce energy consumption and carbon emissions through passive design and a high-performance envelope; and secondly, to include efficient services and equipment with a comprehensive control strategy.
High specification solar control glazing has been used on all facades to reduce cooling consumption and air filtration minimalises heat loss. To maximize energy efficiency, windows have been carefully sized to provide good levels of daylight, while all rooms are equipped with compact energy saving lamps.
Lighting requirements for the ground floor and the terrace on the top floor are also kept to a minimum.
